Macedonia

Macedonia-region 2018

We started our travel by plane to Skopje - the capitol of  North-Macedonia. Skopje has about 670 000 inhabitants so it is not really a big city. Skopje is a modern city with historical monuments, museums and the city itself is both interesting and nice to "explore". We went up to the Millenium Cross - a nice walk up the hillside and a perfect view to the city - and out to the Matka lake to see the caves - really a nice tour on a rainy day.

We travelled on by bus to Ohrid in the southwest part of North-Macedonia. The nice city is situated at the shore of the Lake Ohrid. A trip by boat to the monastery St. Naum is a must and so is a walk in the Mavrovo National Park (by taxi up the hillside !). The city is called "Jerusalem of the Balkans" because of the many (365) churches in the town - anyway; really a pictoresque town worth a visite.

We had not done good enough research how to come from Ohrid to Edessa in the Macedonian region of Greece. For one reason or another (maybe they are not too good friends ?) there were no connection by bus - but there is always a taxi-driver!

Edessa was not really a tourist-destination except from the waterfall and the bridge - and a very good breakfast at the hotel Four Season !

There was a busconnection from Edessa to Ouranopli on Halkidiki - some lazy days by the sea and a boattrip to see some of the big monasteries of Mt Atos.

We left for home after a couple of days in the busy town Thessaloniki - the second largest town in Greece
